	BACKGROUND
Since 2008, Lisa has been teaching, leading and co-creating in higher education within a variety of private and public institutions. She has taught design in undergraduate and graduate graphic design and visual communication programs, including Parsons School of Design (NYC), Queens College City University of New York (CUNY), Marymount Manhattan College (NYC), California State University Long Beach (CSULB), Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Oklahoma State University (OK), and Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI).
As of Fall 2017, she is a full-time Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at KCAI focusing on typography, user experience, and graphic design histories. Together with her colleagues, she strives to create learning experiences interweaving typography, image-making, history, theory and media literacy in a practice-based studio curriculum. As a practicing designer, she works with clients through for instance, a design practice&#38;nbsp;︎︎︎ [link]. As an exhibiting artist, her photography and drawing work has been shown nationally and internationally.
In spring 2019, she co-founded the KCAI Diversity Working Group (DWG), an ad-hoc committee of the Faculty Assembly dedicated to making space for faculty who seek continuing education, support, and professional development in matters regarding diversity and inclusion in the classroom and in academia. DWG initiated the establishment of KCAI’s IDEAS Council, a co-facilitated group of staff, students, and faculty meeting weekly to engage and serve campus-wide issues as a collective, nomination-based recommending body. She has contributed significantly to the Educational Outreach and Exhibition Committee through organizing exhibitions (2017–2020), as well as support student travel opportunities and scholarships through the Mobility Committee (2021–present).

As an extension of her professional work and continuing education, she has completed introductory coursework in Adult Learning (School of Professional Studies, CUNY) and earned a Post-Graduate Certificate in Type Design (Type@Cooper NYC).
She is certified to serve as a Search Advocate (2020–present) on campus search, selection and retention committees. Her service record reflects a long-term commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity and access in education, in and out of the classroom.

Lisa serves as a working board member of AIGA Kansas City (AIGAKC), User Experience Professionals’ Association Kansas City (UXPA-KC) and genEquality.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONAs critical thinkers and makers, the strongest graphic designers must develop an understanding of visual communication from prehistory to the present as a critical history of social, cultural and technological change. We will examine the history of the written word, production methods, mass communication, and other modes and means of design to study the changing values and ideas around distribution, circulation, literacy, and other activities core to design. Research methodologies establish and reinforce a foundation for independent research and writing. We will engage in group conversations to discuss, activate and share insights and ideas we glean from reading, watching, and listening to a range of relevant sources.JUNIOR/SENIOR LEVEL STUDIO COURSES AT KCAI

COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis studio explores the capability of graphic design to create meaningful messages and experiences for the user, whether purely visual, or possibly tangible. The dialogue between designer and audience is studied for the purpose of pragmatic and appropriate design decisions. Ethnographic design research methods (direct observation, writing, video, interview) and gathering audience information and feedback informs the design process. Class exercises will push initial experimentation through the sense of touch, with special consideration to human factors. Projects will address a spectrum of content from social to commercial and across a range of media.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONInterested in letters, alphabets, syllabaries, or writing systems around the globe? In this course, we explore all things typographic from dropcaps to lettering to type design. We explore the back shelves of used bookstores, visit archives and libraries, look at painted signage, and observe how visual language is read, seen, felt and heard through typography. Through a series of prompts, we study the fundamentals and principles of typography supported by highlights from design histories and contemporary practices. We discuss the differences between lettering (drawing words) and making a font (type design). You will be exposed to a variety of forms of calligraphy and drawing letterforms in order to integrate design systems processes and type design practices into your work.

	COURSE DESCRIPTIONIn what ways might typography and language manifest in an artistic practice? This studio elective course begins with a series of workshops focused on the fundamentals and principles of typography. The course offers exposure to artistic practices and inquiries that engage language in space — physical, virtual, digital, material, and augmented spatial constructs. In a proposal-based format, students work with typography at multiple scales. A strong interest in developing work that engages language is encouraged and expected. No prior experience with typography or graphic design courses is required.&#60;img width="400" height="400" width_o="400" height_o="400" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/fd436c1accf440fd9bb0525863df547d2260815a078eb130a64772abc91df4fa/Maione_ImageTK.png" data-mid="162212680" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/400/i/fd436c1accf440fd9bb0525863df547d2260815a078eb130a64772abc91df4fa/Maione_ImageTK.png" /&#62;

COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis course is structured to be a supplemental elective for students in the Graphic Design program. It is an introduction to basic type and lettering techniques, strategies and methods. Each class meeting is an opportunity to get feedback, suggestions and advice on in-progress work. As an independent study course, it is expected that each student brings self-motivation and curiosity to the projects. The special structure of this course is that you have a small cohort of support and common projects. Students are expected to meet with one another between meetings with professors to provide mutual support in their progress.

<description>Working with typography, moving image, and information visualization, my artistic practice is a hybrid of lens-based media, drawing, and writing. I activate the expanded field of graphic design as a creative practice with clients, and concurrently as a subject and context to respond and call to question. I work with clients on commissions as a consultant and design partner, and I create artwork shared through exhibitions in galleries, through collaborations, and public-facing opportunities.

	COURSE NAME
Abecedarium: A Cabinet of Typographic Curiosities
DESN 280-41, 3 credits
Kansas City Art Institute
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Interested in letters, alphabets, syllabaries, or writing systems around the globe? In this course, we explore all things typographic from dropcaps to lettering to type design. We explore the back shelves of used bookstores, visit archives and libraries, look at painted signage, and observe how visual language is read, seen, felt and heard through typography. Through a series of prompts, we study the fundamentals and principles of typography supported by highlights from design histories and contemporary practices. We discuss the differences between lettering (drawing words) and making a font (type design). You will be exposed to a variety of forms of calligraphy and drawing letterforms in order to integrate design systems processes and type design practices into your work.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
— Develop an understanding of the connections and differences between calligraphy, lettering, and typeface design.
